Mixed media and digital artist Jan Blacka makes images inspired by unspoiled landscapes, inner landscapes, and a familiarity with garden plants.

A mixed and multi-media person, she paints with a computer and a pen tablet as well as with materials embracing the concept of "reduce, reuse, recycle," creating unique collages and wall hangings as well as both digital and hand-pulled prints.

Since she was old enough to be trusted with a magic marker, Jan has been in love with art supplies and the creative process. Her explorations have taken her from yarn and paste through oils, acrylics, gouache, intaglio, monotype, encaustic, professional graphics software, the camera phone, and the packaging material that piles up in modern households. Trained in printmaking and mixed media, her digital working methods are closely related to collage and printmaking in the use of repeated elements and layering. Using a pen tablet enables her to draw and paint on the screen as fluidly as on paper or canvas. Occasionally, her photos and scans are incorporated into her digital images. Digital painting combines the precision of computer-aided design with the hand-made sensibility and abstract style expressed in all her work.

Jan earned her BA at Williams College and her MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Jan has worked as a studio assistant for a master printmaker and for an American Craft Council fiber artist, a researcher for the Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus project, and the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. She has taught art in many venues, including Buck's Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp, the Maryland Hall for Creative Arts, and the Maryland College of Art and Design.
