In 1980 I received my first camera, a Canon AE-1. At the time, I was a patrol officer for the Fairfax County Police Department. I used the camera to photograph car accident scenes as well as landscapes, vacations, children's portraits, holidays, and sporting events. When I became a crime scene detective I had access to full service color and black & white photo lab at the police department. Needless to say, I made full use of it. The department was also home to many different kinds of cameras. They included a Yashica 2 1/4, Mamiya 645, Nikon 35mm, Omega 4x5, and an old Graflex 4X5 Crown Graphic camera. (That gives you an idea how long I've been around.) As a crime scene detective, most of my photography work was doing "still life" crime scene documentation, but I was also able to use my skills to take photos for department publications, promotional ceremonies, and special events. In time, I found more artistic subject matter to photograph.
I truly enjoy trying to record those moments in time that will never occur again: the look on a Little Leaguer's face when he scores the winning run, a spectacular thunderstorm as it builds over a blue domed church in Santorini, the rain as it glistens on the cobblestones in Edinburgh, a hundred year old tree on a mountain top in Colorado, and a sunrise over the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. These unique moments will never repeat themselves in exactly the same way again. If I can anticipate these golden moments and capture them with my camera, I can preserve them for all to share. I have, in a certain way, captured time in a box and printed that moment on paper.
