It all began with a magazine article.
Living in California at the time, I was reading Sacramento magazine when an article about two local pastellists, Margot Schulzke and Marbo Barnard, caught my eye. I pointed the article out to my husband. That year, for Christmas, he gave me a gift of pastel painting classes with Ms. Schulzke. I have been hooked ever since 1992. I love pastel's versatility There are so many ways to apply it and so many different papers and supports. It is a medium wide open to investigation. I have learned there are few hard and fast rules, just many different techniques to explore.
Libby's first introduction to pastels was at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. It wasn't love at first sight. She was majoring in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design and dismissed pastels because she found the student grade pastels too powdery and messy.
In 1992, she attended a class with pastel artist and writer for the Pastel Journal, Margot Schulzke. That made all the difference. The following year she enrolled in a workshop sponsored by Schulzke with master pastellist Albert Handel. Workshops with other masters of the art, including Richard McKinley followed.
Libby taught for many years at ArtSquare / Loudoun Academy of Art and now teaches from her downtown Leesburg studio. Her artwork has been exhibited in Virginia at Oatland's Plantation, Art at the Mill / Millwood, and Waterford Red Barn. She is signature member of the Maryland Pastel Society and a founding member of Fine Art Professionals of Northern Virginia (FAP).
