About the Artist

Looking Back
Looking Back" - colored pencil on paper - 10" x 9.5" - 2014 - CPAL Bruynzeel award, 1st Place Colored Pencil Society of America Metro Chapter Members exhibit 2015, Kamen Grand Prize at the Wheaton Arts Festival 2015.

The narrative portraits by Lis Zadravec often reflect her philosophy that who we become in life is a direct result of the adversity we battle. Lis describes these portraits as Girl Heroes. She captures her young subjects at decisive moments and lets the viewer figure out the rest of the story. Seeing us all as the heroes of our own lives, she metaphorically tells these stories and the story of her own struggle to become the artist she is today. It could be her writer family genes or maybe her Washington DC upbringing that impels her to approach her artwork like a writer creating characters, capturing moments in a style inspired by the great illustrations and artwork in books many of us pored over as children. Juxtaposing old with new, she renders them realistically but in the modern century media of colored pencils, saying "There is nothing that this pigment in its precision pointed stick can't do or that oil paint could do better." She approaches her work like an oil painter, layering in the old-school way. She prefers the painterly style. Seeing the artist's hand in the work. Like that perfect, genius brush stroke, you will see all her pencil marks. Lis' work has received many awards and publications in recent years. She has perfected a technique using colored pencils that amazes even the professionals & manufacturers. Lis is actually using the Maroger oil painting technique she was trained in at the Corcoran School of Art, while rendering the work in colored pencils and mixed media. The result has a translucent, realistic effect like traditional portraiture. Innovative in her approach to materials, she creates her surfaces, poring over them in an involved & lengthy process that one judge compared to the meditative work of iconographers. Respected for her teaching & writing as well as her artwork, Ms. Zadravec co-founded Crossroads School of the Arts in Herndon VA, and has taught in many venues from Northern Virginia to upstate New York, to all ages, children through adult. Lis expresses her goal as this: "We all have been given the directive to multiply our gifts. I can think of no better way than to share mine while watching more art be created than I'd ever be able to do myself." While making her art, Lis has raised two children and built a teaching business. She has ambitions in both her artwork and writing projects. She says, "A well-trained artist is a person who can do anything.
