Artist's Statement
Former Combat Artist and Loudoun Now Editorial Cartoonist Dr. Chip Beck is currently the Hillsboro Resident Historical Artist. Hillsboro Virginia is a quaint village established in 1752 and originally known as The Gap.
Beck has set it as his mission to render watercolor paintings of the historic stone or log buildings of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Dr. Beck is also a photographer and writer who has written, produced, and published two books through Goose Island Publishing—part of the Goose Island Art Barn complex.
Driving around the neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince, the artist snapped photographs of local citizens. This lady was particularly intriguing in her expression and dress and ended up as one of the artist's social paintings.

During a trip to the NW part of Haiti near the 18th Century town of St. Marc, the artist captured this image of a local Haitian man riding his horse down a trail toward town.
